5 Things to do this month
Happy fall, friends! Come kick-off the season of colorful leaves, goblins and ghouls and, of course, pumpkin-spice, at First Friday October in Historically Edgy Downtown York! This month’s celebration, taking place from 5-9 p.m. Friday, will feature awesome live entertainment, local vendors, promotions and much more! While you are downtown for First Friday, be sure to witness YWCA York’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Read below to learn more about this amazing event along with four other things that will happen during First Friday October:
1.) Witness Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
During First Friday, YWCA York will host its 10th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, where men walk in high heels to stand up against gender violence. Whether you are watching or walking, the #WAMIHS campaign raises awareness for an important issue in a fun and unique way. All are also welcome to the Kick Up Your Heels pre-party at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum for music, food, a beer garden and more. For more information and to register to walk, check out ywcayork.com.
2.) Swing Dance in Continental Square
Dancers form The Victrola Dance Hall will be gathering in Continental Square (in front of Iron Horse) for a swing dance meetup starting at 5:45 p.m. All are welcome to join in on the action. They have the tunes; all you need to bring is your feet! If you want to continue dancing through the night, shuffle your way down the street to the dance hall at 324 W. Market St. in the WeCo District. For more information, visit thevictroladancehall.com.
3.) Enjoy Free Festive Films at the Appell Center
Start your Halloween celebrations early in the month with a triple feature at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. Enjoy a FREE showing of “Charlie Brown Halloween,” “Scooby Doo Meets Batman and Robin” and Scooby Doo Meets the Harlem Globetrotters. For showtimes and to reserve your seats, visit appellcenter.org.
4.) Get Spooky in the Royal Square District
The Royal Square District will host a family-friendly Halloween carnival. Enjoy a costume contest, straw bale maze, a street show and much more. Be sure to stroll through to arts galleries and discover other spooky experiences, like a tarot card reader at King’s Courtyard and a “Strangelove Vaudeville Slideshow Spectacular” at The Dark Parlour. And be sure to walk through The Haunted Royal Square Garden before you leave! Click here to learn more about the night’s festivities.
