5 Icons Who Performed at the Valencia Ballroom

During the heyday of swing music, Downtown York’s Valencia Ballroom attracted some of history’s greatest band leaders and singers. At this year’s Masquerade Ball, taking place on October 26, at the Valencia, you will have a chance to dance in the footsteps of these legends. Be sure to snag your tickets to this can’t-miss event, but first, check out five iconic performers who graced this downtown destination:

 

1.)    Duke Ellington

In 1932, the Valencia hosted famous musician, Duke Ellington. Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra. He performed one time with his orchestra at the Valencia, which was during the height of his career.  

 

2.)    Frank Sinatra

The king of swing, Frank Sinatra, made an appearance at the Valencia early in his singing career. Sinatra is known as one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling artists of all time, selling more than 150 million records worldwide.

 

3.)    Tommy Dorsey

Tommy Dorsey, well known American jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and band leader of the big band era, performed at our downtown’s historic ballroom six times between 1935-1938. Dorsey was known as the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” because of his smooth-toned trombone playing.

 

4.)    Glenn Miller

Glenn Miller and his orchestra took the stage at the Valencia for one performance in 1937. Miller was a household name during the swing era, known for being a talented trombonist as well as arranger, composer and bandleader.

 

5.)    Guy Lombardo

Famous Canadian-American bandleader and violinist, Guy Lombardo, performed at the Valencia several times throughout the 1930s. Lombardo and his brothers formed a group called the Royal Canadians, which billed itself as creating “the sweetest music this side of Heaven.”
