The Goodridge Freedom Center and York Friends Meeting Present Passages on the Underground Railroad: Quaker Connections. The talk will take place at 5:30 PM on Friday, March 3, 2017.

Following the talk, guests are invited to walk three blocks west for an open house and light refreshments at the York Friends Meetinghouse at 6:30 PM. Guests are invited to arrive early or stay late for tours and conversation at the Goodridge Freedom Center, open from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and at the Meetinghouse, open from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, York County and Adams County were positioned at the geographic crossroads of liberty and enslavement, and as such have a wealth of stories to tell about the brave women and men who advanced the cause of freedom here. Members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) have a part to play in that story, from the Wrights and the Mifflins keeping watch on the Underground Railroad at the Susquehanna River to the Jessups and Chalfants sheltering passengers at their high vantage point on what is now Apple Hill. Mr. Matthew will highlight the efforts of Quaker families and others, having carefully researched their roles in the Underground Railroad.
