First Friday is a celebration of Downtown shops, restaurants, cultural venues, and nightlife hotspots. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., downtown shops and restaurants host special events, offer refreshments and promotions, and sponsor live entertainment.

Here's a look at what's happening around Downtown York during June's First Friday (June 1).

William C. Goodridge Center & Underground Railroad Museum (123 E. Philadelphia St.)

June 6 will mark the 25th anniversary of the day the Golden Venture, a cargo ship carrying nearly 300 Chinese refugees, ran aground near Queens, N.Y.

The Goodridge Freedom Center will revisit the arrival of the Golden Venture on the shores of America 25 years ago, and how several York residents worked hard to secure the freedom of passengers who were detained in the York County prison while seeking asylum.

Come hear attorney Jeffrey D. Lobach speak about the people involved, and see some of the beautiful paper sculptures the detainees created behind prison walls.

The event runs 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is FREE and family friendly. Also, enjoy a tour of the Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum before and after the presentation.

Build a castle, a dinosaur, a robot – whatever your imagination comes up with as we create a crazy clay world together. Plus enjoy our two current exhibits – “Vividly Yours” featuring 11 regional artists and “Ghosts” by Harrisburg artist Chad Whitaker.
