Downtown York Prepares for Small Business Saturday

YORK, PA – Joined by Downtown York business owners, Downtown Inc and the York County Economic Alliance, Mayor Michael Helfrich on Tuesday issued a special proclamation to celebrate Small Business Saturday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year for city merchants.

This Saturday, November 24, is Small Business Saturday, the day when shoppers are encouraged to take a break from the big box stores and bring their holiday shopping to small businesses in their community.

Since America Express established Shop Small Saturday in 2010, customers have reported spending more than $85 billion at independent retailers and restaurants during Shop Small Saturday, according to the credit card company. For downtown merchants, the surge of shopping following the Black Friday rush typically means a sizable uptick in foot traffic – and in their sales.

“When people shop small, they’re supporting their friends and neighbors and driving their hard-earned dollars back into our community,” Helfrich said. “Small businesses not only create jobs for our residents, but also drive commerce to other local merchants and create investment in our neighborhoods. When we shop small, we can have a huge impact in our backyard.”

My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe, one of the many boutique shops of Downtown York, will serve as a Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion. Owner Alexandria Keener Hammond said customers can expect a high level of service from small businesses like hers.

“When people shop small, they’re likely to see the owners working behind the counter and receive hands-on attention,” Keener Hammond said. “We get to know our customers, their families and their preferences. That’s the difference between shopping local or in large chains. And that’s what shoppers will find all across Downtown York on during Small Business Saturday.”

With a historic-yet-hip vibe, Downtown York has plenty of options for shopping small. From the boutiques in the Market District, to the art galleries of Royal Square and the shops of WeCo, shoppers are sure to find a gift for everyone on their list.

Plus, everyone can start their Shop Small Saturday with breakfast in Central Market or Penn Market, and make plans for lunch or dinner at one of Downtown York’s many restaurants.

“Even if you aren’t shopping for the holidays, you can still make participate in Small Business Saturday and make an impact,” said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc and Vice President of Economic & Community Development at the York County Economic Alliance. “Whether you take a yoga class at the local studio in the morning, have your hair cut at the salon down the street or cap your day with a show at the local theater, you’ll be supporting the small businesses that form the foundation of our downtown.”

Luckily for shoppers, getting downtown is easy and so is parking. The three downtown garages will all be open and free of charge – just like they are every Saturday. All are within walking distance of downtown shops, meaning you won’t have far to carry your bags when the day’s shopping is done.

Downtown Inc will also sponsor metered parking in the unit blocks of Market, Beaver, George and Philadelphia streets. White Rose Bar & Grill also allow free parking in its lot for Small Business Saturday.
