YORK, Pa. – York XL, in collaboration with Downtown Inc and Lincoln Charter School, will host its first Clean & Green Challenge during the 10th Annual Go Green in the City celebration on Saturday, April 21, bringing a fun and innovative approach to tackling litter in York during Earth Day weekend.
Sponsored by McCallister & Myers Real Estate Services, White Rose Settlement Services and the York Revolution, the Clean & Green Challenge will pit teams of 10 people against each other to complete activities that clean and beautify York County. This year, teams will compete to photograph, tag and pick up the most trash.
Each team member will download and install the Litterati app (available at www.litterati.org) to photograph litter prior to picking it up and disposing of it. Competitors will tag each photo with #theTypeOfLitter, #theBrand and #TeamName.
At the end of the activity, each person will upload his or her images to Litterati. Photos of the litter will appear as a pin on a publicly accessible map at www.litterati.org. York XL will give out a variety of prizes to teams and individuals.
“We hope to capture meaningful data to pinpoint areas most affected by litter and create data-based strategies to change people’s behavior toward the disposal of trash,” said Sal Galdamez, the Founder of York XL. “At our core, York XL is about on-the-street neighborhood revitalization and this project is a good example of that. If we as neighbors are actively involved in addressing issues such as litter, we will see the cleaner streets we need.”
Teams can sign up for the challenge at www.yorkxl.com.
The Clean & Green Challenge aims to get people to consider the effects that litter has on everyone and to rally York County residents to reduce the amount of litter around them using the free Litterati app.
Students at Lincoln Charter School in York will participate in the Clean & Green Challenge as part of their weeklong Go Green in the City activities.
“We’re excited to be an inaugural partner for this project. It’s a great next step to activities our students already do on a regular basis, like cleaning up daily the neighborhood around our school, and a good fit for other green activities,” said Anne Clark, Director of Community Outreach at Lincoln Charter School. “Lincoln Charter School champions a garden, community events like International Walk to School Day, Bike to City Hall and Wellness Wednesdays.”
York XL’s mission is to inspire people to build exceptional, happy and healthy communities. The Clean & Green Challenge is part of a larger goal to nurture York into becoming literally a green city that is home to more than 200 new gardens and inspires other towns across York County to follow suit.
York XL hopes the Clean & Green Challenge will inspire groups across the city to continue their own clean-up events in the future. More information about the Clean & Green Challenge is available at www.yorkxl.com.
The Clean & Green Challenge is a fitting event for Go Green in the City, sponsored by White Rose Credit Union. This fun, family-friendly festival, celebrating green, healthy and local living, will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 21, on Beaver Street and surrounding areas in Downtown York. The interactive street fair will include more than 50 vendors, live music, live animals, locally sourced food, the WITF Kids' Area, interactive art and much more.
“A clean city is a welcoming city. Events like the Clean & Green Challenge empower residents to take beautification efforts into their own hands and make York a more attractive place for residents, businesses and visitors,” said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc, York’s downtown improvement organization. “We applaud York XL for its innovative approach to tackling litter around the city. It’s a good reminder that we all can play a role in making York a greener city.”
