FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
YORK, Pa. – Chef Darrell Tobin has been cooking for more than four decades, yet still strives to improve every day at his York Blue Moon restaurant in Downtown York’s WeCo neighborhood.
That drive will be evident this week when Tobin joins Downtown Inc to celebrate a new expansion of his popular restaurant. A ribbon-cutting celebration will take place at 4 p.m., Saturday at York Blue Moon, 361 W. Market St. Media coverage is invited.
Already a favorite happy hour spot, the newly expanded York Blue Moon will feature a renovated and larger bar with a new bar menu, cocktails, beer and wine. Dishes on the new bar menu will include Tuna Tartare, Meatball Sandwich or a Crab and Brie Quesadilla made with a Ginger Marshmallow Fluff.
Those dishes bring many flavors to the party at York Blue Moon, and part of the expansion is to make sure everyone can enjoy Tobin’s creative culinary creations.
York Blue Moon now will also be handicapped-accessible for wheelchairs of up to 42 inches and feature larger bathrooms to accommodate all patrons. Improving accessibility was the major impetus of the expansion, said Tobin, who expects the change will help him turn an even stronger business.
“I just want to do the best I know how, and we attract customers that appreciate that,” Tobin said. “The new expansion will offer an even better experience for our clientele and make the restaurant more accessible to everyone. Not only did we want to increase our business, we wanted to increase our customer base by making it easier for everyone to enjoy a fine dining experience at Blue Moon.”
York Blue Moon’s expansion will also feature a new green space, the Yard, landscaped by the Garden Club of York.
Parking is available on the street, behind the bar and in the Penn Market lot when the market is closed.
Tobin and his wife and co-owner, Janine, opened York Blue Moon in 2006. The expansion has been about four years in the making, ever since they bought the former antiques shop next door.
“Janine has worked on this expansion with me every step of the way. None of this would be possible without her hard work and dedication,” Tobin said.
York Blue Moon’s expansion leaves the restaurant positioned to take advantage of future growth on the West Market Street corridor, where RSDC is bringing 13 new, high-end apartments and new retail space to the same block as York Blue Moon.
GRIT marketing group also plans to open a new office near the restaurant, joining Gavin as high-energy creative firms in the neighborhood. And The Fortress Initiative aims to bring a computer coding boot camp to the former Western National Bank Building in WeCo.
“As WeCo enjoys rapid revitalization, we’re happy to see longtime favorites like York Blue Moon reinvesting in their businesses,” said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc, Downtown York’s improvement organization. “York Blue Moon is not only an excellent place to enjoy a meal, it’s a catalyst for ongoing change in the city. We appreciate the Tobins’ ongoing commitment to the WeCo neighborhood and Downtown York. When restaurants invest, others follow.”
As WeCo grows, new residents and young professionals will all benefit from a casual upscale spot to grab lunch, dinner or a happy-hour cocktail.
Yet, as good as that will be for business at York Blue Moon, it wasn’t what fueled Tobin to expand.
“I just want to do a good job until I retire,” he said. “That’s all I want. That’s it.”
