Downtown Inc to Raise Money for Flower Plantings During Give Local York

YORK, PA – Beautifying Downtown York will become even more of a community effort during Give Local York on May 4, when Downtown Inc will raise funds to facilitate flower plantings throughout the city's business district.

"Something as simple as flowers can bring life to the streets and sidewalks we travel every day. A cared-for community draws people in and makes them feel at home and energized,” said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc, Downtown York’s improvement organization. “Our annual flower plantings fill Continental Square and key downtown corridors with personality and color, contributing to the overall experience for business, visitors and residents. During Give Local York’s Give Day, everyone can play a role in making Downtown York beautiful.”

Downtown Inc is one of the primary funders and facilitators of the flower plantings. The organization partners with the Garden Club of York and the City of York’s Parks Department each spring to ensure the plantings occur. More than 90 planters around downtown are filled with colorful blooms.

The plantings are part of Downtown Inc’s ongoing placemaking and beautification efforts that improve the cleanliness, attractiveness and walkability of Downtown York for residents and visitors. Other projects including facilitating the mulching of downtown tree wells, running a year-round Clean-Up Crew and more.

Giving to Downtown Inc at any level during Give Local York's Give Day will directly offset costs associated with the flower plantings. Donating as little as $25 can help fund the flowers and needed care for one planter for one month.

To help fund the flower plantings, Give Local York philanthropists can visit on May 4 and search for "Downtown Inc" to find the organization's page and donate.

The Left Bank Restaurant & Bar will also serve as Downtown Inc’s official restaurant partner for Give Local York. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of its May 4 sales, up to $1,000, to the organization. Interested parties may make reservations online at or by calling 717-843-8010.

“The Give Local York initiative is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase and support nonprofits that make a big difference in our local community. For us, Downtown Inc has been a major catalyst in creating a thriving downtown. Our team is excited to support an important organization that is dedicated to promotions, safety, beautification and economic development right outside our doors,” said Chef-Owner Sean Arnold of The Left Bank Restaurant & Bar. “We’re looking forward to serving up flavorful dishes while benefiting Downtown Inc on May 4 at the restaurant. We hope to see plenty of familiar and new faces out in support.”

Interested individuals may also come to the Downtown Inc office at 2 E. Market St., in Downtown York on May 4, and staff will assist you in donating to the organization.

In addition, Downtown Inc invites everyone to visit the office from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., May 4, for a reception with breakfast items. Downtown Inc will also host a Give Local York happy hour reception at its office from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., which will launch into First Friday celebrations all around Downtown York.

Downtown Inc also plans to brighten everyone’s day by handing out white roses, courtesy of Chas. A. Schaefer Flowers, around Downtown York during Give Local York’s Give Day.

Presented by the York Federal Fellows, Give Local York is a 24-hour online giving spree that will benefit more than 200 York County nonprofits. The overall goal is to raise $1 million on May 4, during a community-wide celebration that will culminate with a party in Downtown York’s Central Market. Give Local York will reveal the final fundraising total at midnight.
