The new Downtown York Landscape Stewardship Fund will allow Downtown Inc to better care for public art, support its Clean-Up Crew and beautify York well into the future.

YORK, PA – Downtown Inc announced Tuesday that it has created the Downtown York Landscape Stewardship Fund, which is intended to sustain maintenance of the organization’s beautification and placemaking efforts in Downtown York for years to come.

Part of Downtown Inc’s current strategic plan, the Landscape Stewardship Fund will enhance the organization’s placemaking efforts by supporting the maintenance of public art, annual flower plantings, Downtown Inc’s Clean-Up Crew and other related needs.

The York County Community Foundation will manage the fund on behalf of Downtown Inc. It will exclusively benefit Downtown Inc’s urban landscapes agenda.

Downtown Inc CEO Silas Chamberlin announced the creation of the fund at Tuesday’s Downtown Update at the Capitol Theatre, alongside Jane Conover, President and CEO of the York County Community Foundation, and Eric Menzer, Chairman of Better York.

“Our intent is to maintain and build the principal of the fund and use only the interest, similar to a traditional endowment, to generate targeted support for our ongoing placemaking efforts,” Chamberlin said. “Downtown Inc will seek to grow the fund over time, and we encourage interested donors to support the fund and consider contributing to it as part of their estate planning and planned giving.”

The Downtown York Landscape Stewardship Fund will start with a $26,000 balance, thanks to the generosity of local benefactors.

The Kinsley Family Foundation has provided $13,000 to jumpstart the fund, describing it as its way of giving back to a city that is becoming a destination for dining, entertainment, business and urban living.

“We believe that a vibrant York City is an important part of a sustainable, vibrant York County. As so many individuals and companies have invested in the revitalization of York City, we wanted to be part of the effort,” said Tim Kinsley, President of Kinsley Properties. “While work has focused on new buildings, we thought we could contribute to the public space between the buildings and the streets. Clean sidewalks, pleasant landscaping and well-maintained street art combine to create attractive public spaces that will only enhance the work of so many other small business owners, developers, financial backers and private individuals alike.”

Better York, a civic organization focused on economic development and public safety, has contributed $8,000 and plans to give another $4,000 in 2019.

The York County Community Foundation has contributed $5,000.

“We thank the Kinsley Family Foundation, Better York and the York County Community Foundation for their generosity in helping launch this important new fund,” Chamberlin said. “Downtown York must be an inviting and comfortable place in order to attract people to work, play, and live here. The creation of the Downtown York Landscape Fund gives us a forward-looking tool to ensure our city center remains beautiful for years to come.”
